Assignment 1 - Reading and Synthesizing Core Terminology

  • You can read more details about this assignment here
  • Readings are accessible via the resources page

Step 1 - Define your readings

  • Please add your readings selection for the terminology exercise before 25th of April on the readings selection page.

Step 2 - Concept mapping of core terms

Step 3 - Reporting

Conceptual mapping is a strong tool to synthesize concepts and create an ordered structure of thinking. We started selecting keywords in our readings and showing the link between them. This operation is very useful in order to understand the meaning and make it clear for us firstly. We noticed that creating a concept map is a good way to improve knowledge and fix concepts, so it is a learning method. Furthermore, this tool has allowed us to explain the readings to the other members of the group quickly and effective. The links in the maps show very well the reasoning, so you are able to understand the mental connections that underlie the argument of a reading. Then we overlaid the maps looking for possible connections and we found common concepts that were common to all maps, so, starting from these, we built a new structure that underline where the keywords came from. This operation is a kind of stratification of knowledge, it gives you general idea of the argument and let you come back to other maps. As in the game of chinese boxes you can go deeply and deeply, understanding that there are no boundaries in the knowledge and that it is an endless process. Finally you have a vision of your learning path and it will be very useful to have a trace about what you have done in order to come back, one day, and quickly reconnect yourself with that reasoning.
