Team Background

  • A'mina Santina: Grew up in a multicultural family, I'm currently studying Building engineering and Architecture at the University of Bologna.
  • Yadhira Peña: I´m an architect and environmental urbanist from Peru. I studied my career in the Scientific University of the South in Lima.
  • Tommaso Ridolfi: Hi everyone! I’m from Italy and my mother-language is Italian but I can also speak English and French fluently. I'm a student at the University of Bologna, currently attending a Combined Bachelor and Master degree in Building engineering and Architecture. I’ve always been interested in enhancing my knowledge in Architectural landscape and I think this course can give me a lot from this prospective.

  • Szabo Balazs: I'm from Hungary and I'm in my last xear of studying Landscape Architecture at the Hungarian University of Agriculture and Life Sciences. I've always felt a connection to the environment and nature, I've had this influence from my parents from a young age.

Reflection

We have found hard to express a short reflection on a course with such a variety of interesting informations. We have been able to catch them from every meeting, every group session and breakout rooms. It has been such a nice experience to interchange ideas and exchange opinions on different topics, all with the same thread. It all helped claryfing the importance and meaning of what democratic landscape transformation is. Without the seminar and the lectures, we've all agreed that our interest in the topic would have not been fufilled as much.

We all agree in the Art.1 of the UN declaration of Human rights: "All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights. They are endowed with reason and conscience and should act towards one another in a spirit of brotherhood".

And as we deepen in the concept of Landscape, which means an area, as perceived by people, whose character is the result of the action and interaction of natural and/or human factors.

So from Henri Lefebvre we got the "right to change ourselves by changing the city more after our desires", and this can be done by recognizing the community's identities, values and ambitions, and Democracy, which is the spatial materialisation of public landscape, and it could be representative, direct and deliberative.

This last one has in its definition the partecipatory process that links to the participation concept, which is also a responsability and engagement that every citizen should be able to have in order to give the right contribute in preserving the landscape.

Landscape that is both physical and within the meanings and stories that people have imbued it with, It is also the heritage of everyday practices and rituals that revolve around it. While the right to landscape is both tangible and intangibles, also intersecting with the rights that support existance and dignity, the human rights. It's a key element of individual and social well-being and its protection, management and planning entail rights and responsabilities for everyone.

We've found necessary to understand the importance of Participation, which comes from education, an instrument that brings the ability to critically and creatively deal with reality and discover how to participate in the transformation of the world. And this interaction can not always be formal, as many of these comes between people outside formal organizations. So Participation is a fundamental instrument in advancing Landscape Democracy, by co-creating and co-designing, celebrating diversity and repairing injustices. It should be authentic, and reflect community's unique identities, must be reflective and accountable to people/nature.

Below are some key concepts that helped develop the conceptual map:

  • Collaborative Environment: The collaborative environment is key to shaping the landscape, where practice, tools and methods are informed by case studies. This process involves community interaction, where question and answer sessions play a crucial role in understanding needs and solutions.
  • Landscape: The landscape itself is a living fabric that encompasses the history and culture of a community, reflecting collaborative practices and human interaction. It is a continuously evolving entity, influenced by human activities and decisions made in collaborative environments.
  • Social Justice: Social justice issues, such as poverty and health disparities, are intrinsically linked to the landscape. Conscious design can help mitigate these issues by creating spaces that promote equity and inclusion.
  • Climate Change: Finally, the landscape is directly influenced by climate change. Sustainable resource management and thoughtful design can help combat the effects of climate change, while ensuring that the landscape can continue to support the community that inhabits it.

For sure we all have found important informations regarding the argument and and we go home with more knowledge about how to approach future discussions on this field.
