Reasons for lacking participation

Concerns with respect to effort (time, resources)

  • Experts seem to think its easier, cheaper and less work.
  • I think that every person have a different opinion and interest about/in the landscape, so it might be hard to bring all this opinions on one common denominator.
  • few economic resources
  • Public interaction is a long lasting process but execution is tough and time consuming.

Lacking communication

  • People seem to be not interested and experts don't involve them
  • The most decision are made by private by according with autorities or other few people. Lack of information
  • Lack of knowledge, probably
  • there are public consultation on the local level in norway, but it is rarely active participation in the process of landscape-making decisions -- rather you can comment on plans

Lacking knowledge/information

  • Lack of knowledge of the consequenses of the decisions regarding the landscape, a to big of a trust in planners and experts
  • Not all people are involved and well informed about what is happening in our territory
  • The forum for communication, from the point of the citizenry, is not always apparent or available.
  • In the legislation is included the posibility the public to participate in the decision making on the landscape but actualy the public normaly doesn't know what decisions are taken. And citizens doesn't know that they can particiapte.
  • the information about why it is important, and on how to participate, is available but often too complex
  • Also, the city does not promote enought meetings and publicize them to people..

Concerns with respect to weak participation culture

  • In Finland there is a general lack of confidence to voice your opinions.
  • Lack places and interest to interact in the society, lack of information and engagement to protest. Centralized politics
  • Its a top down approach, decisions are made by the local authorities and political officials
  • we're often involved in decision about we don't know so much while about more important thing we're completely cut out
  • Citizenship we are asleep
  • Long political prosecces, economic pressure and little interest to participate in te decisionmaking
  • There is not enough information and interest from the public and the governants dont facilitate participation. The decision making seems only from one side of the power.
  • every once in a while. Very dogmatic form of participation
  • public partecipation is reduced
  • There are few reasons for why people in Noway are not involved. The country have a stong state power, and big middleclass. Few struggle people struggle here. Second goverment doesnt know how to do participation in Norway, but I think is slowly turning.
  • Because we are often involved too late and given little alternatives. Often you get a chance to say yes or no to one option, but there might be many more alternatives that are not yet discovered.
  • There is no tradition, it's starting in Spain. Maybe people don't trust it yet
  • Probably the lack of awareness about the importance of involve communities in the designing process that regard them.
  • Despite the public participation, decisions are made in government circles
  • The culture of public participation in England is more focussed on notifying the general public rather than including them in the design process
  • It's hard to say... I think there are some people that are always involved in the process, and the others are simply not used to take part on these types of conversations.
  • Participation processes don't include all user groups -- only the ones who are interested in attending public hearings and so on (usually men in their 60s).

Lacking awareness of landscape issues

  • There is a lack of perception of citizens concerning their landscape, so normally they don’t participate.
  • Because my contry is not well developed and people do not care about nature

Other concerns

  • there're a lot politic and economic reasons to not improve green energies
  • Maybe also the economic interests are not in tune with a participation process

Reasons for good participation

  • In my community in the State of Washington (U.S.A.) , as a high school and college student I have had several opportunities to communcate my ideas and feedback for every major public project in my community. However, not many people are attending.
  • Different experiences of partecipation of the citizens in Bologna. The administration has lastly understood that these processes facilitate the concrete realization of urban projects
  • It is really a difficult question, but it is possible for the people to be involved. But the public is not always good to use it, I fear that they not always care. But it is quite close from the politican to the people.
