I chose a narrative path format, a sort of landscape-journey, because transformation is not linear. It’s a winding process that begins with reframing how we see problems and involves a deep, emotional type of participation.
At the base, I drew two benches under the tree of “SPACES”, symbolizing the start of reframing problems and emotional engagement. From there, the path leads us through key practices to drive change such as power mapping and storytelling... two wheels that move us forward, revealing both dynamics and meaning.
As we go on, we face temporal challenges because transformation takes time, and trust can’t be rushed. But we also encounter powerful tools like community rituals and gamification, which help sustain participation and make space for creativity.
I used a hot air balloon to represent participation: it gives direction, lifts our ideas, and carries our collective actions forward.
Across the sky, I highlighted 4 guiding principles: embrace conflict, ensure accessibility, encourage creativity, and build cultural narratives: which are especially relevant in plural and contested landscapes.
Near the lake, I added a boat with 3 friends, to visualize the tension between inclusiveness and efficiency, a dilemma we often face in participatory planning.
Finally, there are a bird and a fish (reminding us sometimes positive change come as we leave the stable ground) asking a few open questions: Who defines the value of a landscape? How is trust made visible within a space?
Thank you, Bina
