Rationale: Why have you chosen this case for the landscape and democracy seminar?

Why is this case relevant?
I chose Blvd Morazan because it's a place I currently go to by car or by walking, its proximity to various points of the city have made it the actual city center. Nevertheless the experience of the citizen using this spaces changes dramatically by the mean of transportation he or she uses. If you want to go jogging you are forced to do it at 5:00am when cars are not around. I personally believe it's an interesting challenge to bring the best of both community friendly and commercial friendly approaches to one place.

Blvd Morazan is currently the financial and commercial center of Tegucigalpa, due to its strategic position it is also surrounded by various neighborhoods. Tegucigalpa currently lacks of public spaces and therefore the boulevard is used at early hours of the day as a place to walk the dog and or jogging. It is also used at early hours because sidewalks are in really poor conditions and people are forced to use the streets for their pedestrian recreational activities. The hour is vital since its the only moment in the day when cars are not present. The second problem of the boulevard is that it was named after an historic character of the Honduran history, but its actual character has being overtaken by american franchises that impoverish the urban image, leaving no space for public space and a less generic identity.

A key-point to start a democratic based change would be to ask people if they are happy using this street really in the morning and how they would like to improve the boulevard's condition in order to enhance more activities during the day. The second step would be to build mental maps of the place and to obtain people's impressions about how the boulevard could look more pedestrian and community friendly.
