Rationale: Why have you chosen this case for the landscape and democracy seminar?

  • Why is this case relevant?
  • Today, it is a big challenge to understand homelessness is a problem or not. Homelessness is a global issue which all of us facing with homeless peoples in daily life. There are many political, social, and democratic projects are around the world that they working on this issue as we can see in out neighborhood. Even they became as a part of urban landscape in some countries.

So it is difficult to understand, homelessness is a “problem” or “an accepted way of life”.

Reflection

  • What are the major challenges for changing the situation?
The major challenge from my point of view is that defend the homelessness issue as a problem or as a way of life. Base on economical problems, homelessness is an increasing issue these days and people became poor and poor. In this case, families and individuals came to the street to find a shelter for passing their life. Defensive design, tiring to decreasing the amount of homelessness by eliminating the homeless people from urban landscape and it may push them toward suburban area.

On the other hand, inclusive design help them to find a temporary shelter to continue their life in streets and help them to access to food, medical and general hygiene. It may cause to increase the harmlessness issue by accepting this way of life in the society. But, which one is the best way? This is a big challenge.

  • What could be a starting point for democractically-based change?
Starting point for democratically-based change is need a general policy by government with the active participation of community (charity) to eliminate the preliminary needs of the homeless people at first and in second level draw a long-term policy to make the permanent infrastructure to decreasing the level of homelessness.

Also it is very important to have a powerful policy to increase the quality level of economic situation of resident by government to prevent the homelessness in the community.
