Rationale: Why have you chosen this case for the landscape and democracy seminar?
In 2010 the municipality of Udine, a small town with around 100.000 inhabitants located in the north-east of Italy, decided to invest in a new infrastructural plan. The idea was to build a new underground parking structure in a very central plaza. This project raised up public concern due to many reasons:
- " the cost of the investment was high"
- "people didn’t think about it as an essential work"
- "the parking structure might change the perception and the life of “1th May” plaza, that it is a very huge and particular square"
I think this case of study it is an example of a project that it isn’t a planning mistake in itself, but the way in which it has been projected and built it is problematic therefore has showed off a lack of communication and of collaboration between the politicians and the local community.
