The four main challenges in Klein-Tischardt are strengthening diversity and preserving traditions, entrances and hotspots, Klein-Tischardt by the water and revitalize public space. Those four challenges have accompanied us from the beginning. For the sustainable development goals the goal 9, 10 and 11 are the most important for our project. So the industry, innovation and infrastructure are important for us, because we want to revive the ground floor zone to revitalize the street and public space. Also to reduce inequalities and to strengthen the diversity is a big challenge for us and an important topic in our project. The sustainable cities and communities reflects our third challenge Klein-Tischardt by the water and our goal to bring the green infrastructure from the Neckarufer to the quarter and to make it more visible.
 
By forming a strategy, we could master our four landscape democracy challenges. In order to approach our challenges, we planned long term and short term interventions, which helped us to face some difficult problems and to overcome them. By planning this intervention we want to draw attention to the present problems. And to add more dimensions, we wanted to add our tool, which was the postcards from the future. With this tool, the residents got a possibility to let us know about their voice, so they can express their thoughts. This also has the aim to strengthen the exchange between the residents. In the process, we took the leading role to organize the whole project and the intervention. Our role was also to encourage the residents to think about their wishes and goals for the future. The idea was to give input to criticize given situations and to promote their creativity, to overthink those situations and to search for good solutions for everybody.

The power structure in the quarter is in a constant change. Through the intervention process of the postcards, we got to know which stakeholders are important for the residents of Klein-Tischardt and which should have more influence and power. Some of them are the city administration, because they must take their leading role to change the problematic situations and also the gastronomy and the small businesses must have a stronger voice and be more present. Less visible in the postcard intervention were the senior citizens and also the tourists as stakeholders in Klein-Tischardt are not that visible.
 
Trough our method, we created a connection for the different interest groups and one aspect of our role was also to set the frame for the intervention and the whole designing process that comes with it. We had to organize everything like to obtain the mail boxes and the other materials.
 
Some aspects which we would change in retrospect are to make the framework easier to understand and to plan more time to evaluate the postcards. Also one important point is distributing the exact same postcards to each household.

The teaching and learning method helped us to get very clear about the present challenges and to concretize the problems. We learned a lot of different methods to incorporate the community and to be very creative in the interventions, which helped us to be free in our design process of the postcards intervention. It also helped us to reflect on our process and if our method will work how we think it will.
 
We couldn’t work in one place at first and everything took much more time and was less effective. But some months later in the design process of our intervention we worked together, so it was a lot easier for us to discuss about our ideas for the first prototypes. So later everything became more interactive again and our project made good progress.
The course phases helped us to reflect our landscape democracy challenge from the beginning and dive deeper into that topic step by step.
 
The assignment of the different phases helped us to reflect the phase in which we were in the intervention, to look back and see what was good and what should be changed the next time. So because of the good reflection, we learned very much about participative intervention and we collected first experiences in this specific field of work of our job.

*The greatest outputs were the results we got from different age groups and the variety of different ideas. The citizens have used the postcards not only to communicate good ideas and inspiration but also to vent their frustration. It has been a good valve to relieve frustration, for a large group.

We had also no chance to get in direct contact with the residents, only when we delivered the postcards, we talked to some about our project. In this situation, they were able to contribute well to our design process of the whole project because of the postcard intervention.
 
One indicator to measure the performance is the amount of feedback and we fortunately got a lot of feedback.
 
The participants of the intervention got to see some new ideas how some problematic locations could be turned into something new. We think that they liked the intervention, not at least because it was anonymously. The intervention also gave them the possibility to participate during the design process of the whole intervention despite of this Covid-19 situation.
*The challenge is not always what we thought in the beginning, they are often more deeply rooted. A detailed analysis leads to the important and essential challenges. The next step would be to incorporate the results of the postcards of the residents into the draft and to present the drafts again to them in a public participation.
 
The five aspects that we learned during the Led2Leap seminar are how important reflection is in the whole process of discovering the challenges and also the participative intervention. We tried our best with the framework of the postcard intervention this time, but the next time we would change some things and evaluate more. Giving the residents an even better opportunity to follow the evaluation process is also an important lesson for us. To use the learnt possibilities and also the knowledge from the postcard intervention in the future could be a good experience to make use of it. And the last one is to gather more experience to be able to use it for yourself and fall back on it.

The main values are sense of identity, sense of community and also safety on the streets. For the top ground rules the reflection is a very important step in every process and to test ideas on friends and acquaintances before using them. The possibility to always ask for feedback is essentially important, because you are often restricted in your own way of thinking and lose the overall view. To finish with our key values and principles that got indispensable in the whole intervention process are creating together, rethink old values to integrate new, encourage exchange, promote diversity, design for people and to share the power of design, so everybody gets involved in the designing process and can voice their ideas.

We had interesting and enriching session-times. It was a great possibility to get to know the mode of operation and the mindset of people from all over the world.

We enjoyed getting an impression from other projects. Not just seeing the results but being kind of a part of the process and receiving updates about the development of the different projects.

*Which limitations we were facing
Sometimes the language was quite a barrier. We had to concentrate strongly to stay with in. Often it was difficult to understand the people. And it was challenging to relate to persons because only having a black or just small picture doesn't makes them recognizable.
 
*What we have learnt
We learnt to strengthen our values about interaction and integration of the residents. Because of the Corona-Situation we had to be creative in terms of the participation method. To get in touch with the people we had to think of new ways and possibilities, which in the end was quite successful.
We liked the external view on our project. New questions and suggestions were coming up and promoted us.
 
*What we would do differently
Not having the Corona background it would have been much easier. Next time we would like to get in touch and interact with the people in real, not just through postcards. We think that would be even more intensive and lead to dialogues which is very important.

Landscape Democracy Rationale

  • Klein-Tischardt is a very mixed district. Different social groups live there in different forms of housing. We see a particularly high need for public open space there. People from different backgrounds and different age groups demand the exchange with other people. For this purpose (open) space must be created. The existing, currently undeveloped building area represents a fragile centre of democracy. In case of doubt, it is here that it can decide whether or not citizens are to be given a say. Moreover, the quarter is crossed by a main traffic axis. This means that more people than just the Klein-Tschardt residents have an interest, whether social or economic, in the design of the quarter.

Phase B: Democratic Landscape Analysis and Assessment

The Scene in your Story of Analysis

The Actors in your Story of Analysis

  • For the following scene the main stakeholders are Vladi the postman and Tina the cyclist.
  • The other actors in this scene as granny Renate, Jimmy of Tyers Herl, Mr Smith the police officer, refugee Raj and schoolboy Ben are minor relevant or just people passing by.
  • They all stand for the diversity of Kleintischardt's society. This is why those actors are equally important for the results of our analysis.
  • Their wishes and needs are of equal relevance for the further design.

The Story of Analysis

  • The Gerberplatz has been the central square in Klein-Tischardt since the Middle Ages. Unfortunately not much of this is recognizable anymore and even appreciated. The square is mainly dominated by parking cars, the traffic and the tyre company. In front of this company there is much going on like customers coming, waiting and leaving. But in general you rarely see people using this public space, even though there is this small island of greenery in the left. But it’s surrounded by a dangerous traffic situation.

So let us tell you the story:

  • It was sunny and calm friday afternoon on the Gerberplatz.
  • Tina on her bike just came from the urban gardening. When a postvan was racing around the corner. This was when the accident happened.
  • In the following three scenes you can see how all the people react and interact and how the situation was solved.

Reflect on your Story of Analysis

  • We have taken a everyday situation which is based on a true incident and brought it on stage.
  • By using storytelling we want to evoke a feeling of empathy in people. Through the story, we have tried to put ourselves in the shoes of different characters and show the problems to the Klein-Tischardter in a way that is close to everydays life.
  • Last but not least, we have realized that something has to happen first so that people wake up and see that something has to be changed. Therefore new and better stories can be told.

Phase C: Collaborative Visioning and Goal Setting

The Scene in your Story of Visioning

  • By analysing the area we found out about the problems in Klein-Tischardt and after summarizing those problems, we have determined our four different challenges. Some problems are the car dominated public spaces, which makes them very unattractive and also dangerous and the access to the water is restricted and the shore of the Neckar has a lot of unused potential.
  • The challenges are also our main concept points. We want to focus on strengthening the diversity and preserving traditions, revitalize the public space, highlight entrances and hotspots and Klein-Tischardt by the water.

The Actors in your Story of Visioning

  • Same characters as last time in KT’s theater, but two new characters are joining the others.
  • Mr.Friedrich who wants to keep his election promises and who is pursuing his vision for NT.
  • Angelina, she is a student and she wants to get involved in politics and environmental issues.
  • Who can participate? In general everybody has the possibility to participate and to get involved in the intervention, but only those who are comitted are directly involved.
  • Where can they participate? Online on Instagram and Facebook or in the district in workshops or in displays in shop windows.
  • The four challenges led us to the three locations with high potential like the Gerberplatz, the Metzinger Street and the shore of the Neckar. They receive the postcards from the future in their mailboxes and then they can freely design them on the front and back side.

The Story of Visioning

It is possible for us to collect all the different goals of the residents by carrying out this action. They can visualize their ideas and design the postcards and so they can send us their visions for the future. To develop the goals, there is a display in the shop windows at the Gerberplatz, so the residents can see the other ideas and get inspired by the design of other postcards. The next step is to vote for ideas and they can evaluate for the most important goals via the ballot box. Out of all these goals we can prioritize some of them through this voting strategy.

Our vision is a german saying “dot dot comma dash - Klein Tischardt’s new face”, which represents the goals of the residents. Because of the different visions the face of Klein-Tischardt can be very individual like the safe face of KT, the cultural face of KT, the green face of KT or the innovative face of KT and many others.

For the strategy-building we picked out on a special goal, which is the convivial face. Therefore we planned the event of open doors on the Gerberplatz. The first step will be to build work teams to plan the event. After about 3 month the event will take place and becomes very popular in the community. From this evolves a more and more open and activated ground floor zone within about a year. After three years time long-term planning for the Gerberplatz can begin.

Reflect on your Story of Visioning

  • It was very important that the goals are wide-spreaded and to meet diverse requirements. In the beginning, it is also indispensable to define strategy and to follow the different steps of this strategy.
  • Good visions should be motivating and exciting and they also should broaden the view. It creates awareness for invisible and it is important that they encourage to face what seems impossible, so the people can freely think about their visions. To be representative, many people should be involved and in first place have the possibility to participate and to share their thoughts.

Phase D: Collaborative Design, Transformation and Planning

Your Prototyping Action

  • We started to realise our vision from Phase C and to design prototypes for the intervention. The idea was to insert them in the mail boxes to get in contact with the residents, so they can send us postcards from the future. We installed four mail boxes on popular places in Klein-Tischardt like the city museum and the Gerberplatz.
  • The intervention stands for collecting different ideas, so we wanted to give the residents a tool to visualize their ideas about some problematic scenes and their identity of the district. And it is a good possibility to get in touch with people in the corona situation and also to strengthen the exchange between the residents.
  • The intervention relates to the shared goals and visions of the community. They have the possibility to visualize their wishes and goals by colouring or writing on the postcards. The scenes on the postcards relate to some important locations like the Gerberplatz. To create the visions of the community, we evaluate the results.

The Evolution of Your Prototyping Action

  • Who was working together?

We as Nürtingen Team 3 and as the initiators of this intervention in exchange with our university supervisors.

  • Methods to collaborate

Our methods to collaborate were a test run with different people and the feedback of the supervisors.

  • Step 1 of the collaborative process was to create the first samples
  • Step 2 we presented the first prototypes and then let some people try them out
  • Step 3 was to incorporate suggestions to improve the design of the postcards ->this resulted in the final design

The Plan Behind Your Prototyping Action

  • For the realization process, the first goal was the self made design of the postcards and to create something for all age groups in consultation with the university lecturers and then to see the finished products after we ordered them on the internet.
  • The second goal was to get prepared for the processing phase, so we ordered four mail boxes on ebay and painted them with our logo ot make them recognizable.
  • After painting them we needed to set them up at certain locations and we had to get a permission at the regulatory agency. The bakery Shirince also needs to be informed, because we set up on mail box in front of the bakery. We inserted postcards in the mail boxes of the residents of the retirement home Kroatenhof.
  • The fourth goal was to deliver the postcards and to inform them via email or to post pictures on Instagram and Facebook, so they can follow the process.
  • 14 days later, we collected the returned postcards and in the next step we contacted the shop owner, so we could exhibit the postcards in the shop window. To achieve that, we stayed in consultation with university lecturers and also needed good contacts to achieve this.
  • Our last goals is now to evaluate all ideas and getting to know of their wishes and then presenting the results to residents.
  • The timeframe included 8 weeks of work, 2 weeks designing process, 1 week preparation, 2 weeks processing period for residents and 3 weeks for the evaluation and at the same time 4 weeks for the exhibition in the shop window. As a group, we prepared and coordinated everything together and Ellen clarified the permission of the whole action.

  • What was the atmosphere like?

It was exciting to see how they visualize their goals, if they would draw their problems or only write about them and how they would react on this action. We were also unsure how many people take part of the action and very interested to see some filled out postcards of different age groups.

Giving the residents an even better opportunity to follow the evaluation process is also an important lesson for us. To use the learnt possibilities and also the knowledge from the postcard intervention in the future could be a good experience to make use of it. And the last one is to gather more experience to be able to use it for yourself and fall back on it.

Your Living Lab Code of Conduct

The main values are sense of identity, sense of community and also safety on the streets. For the top ground rules the reflection is a very important step in every process and to test ideas on friends and acquaintances before using them. The possibility to always ask for feedback is essentially important, because you are often restricted in your own way of thinking and lose the overall view. To finish with our key values and principles that got indispensable in the whole intervention process are creating together, rethink old values to integrate new, encourage exchange, promote diversity, design for people and to share the power of design, so everybody gets involved in the designing process and can voice their ideas.

Process Reflection

  • Reflection on the work and team

We had interesting and enriching session-times. It was a great possibility to get to know the mode of operation and the mindset of people from all over the world. Impressive to see how large the bandwidth of projects with regards to landscape democracy challenges are. We enjoyed getting an impression from other projects. Not just seeing the results but being kind of a part of the process and receiving updates about the development of the different projects.

  • Which limitations we were facing

Sometimes the language was quite a barrier. We had to concentrate strongly to stay with in. Often it was difficult to understand the people. And it was challenging to relate to persons because only having a black or just small picture doesn't makes them recognizable.

  • What we have learnt

We learnt to strengthen our values about interaction and integration of the residents. Because of the Corona-Situation we had to be creative in terms of the participation method. To get in touch with the people we had to think of new ways and possibilities, which in the end was quite successful. We liked the external view on our project. New questions and suggestions were coming up and promoted us.

  • What we would do differently

Not having the Corona background it would have been much easier. Next time we would like to get in touch and interact with the people in real, not just through postcards. We think that would be even more intensive and lead to dialogues which is very important.
