We’ve chosen a demolished fenced storehouses area, placed in the Horta-Guinardò district of Barcelona, because it’s a local and medium scale site witch could represent a common situation in european cityscape, where citizens looking for interfaces area to connect with. Also I think, there is a lack of community and green public spaces in the city. We would like to keep it as no-building area and convert it in an Urban Open Space Citizens Laboratory. We think it could be a good starting point for improve community testing space for sustainable and community building-up practices in the neighborhood.

The first thing we see as challenge for changing the situation, is about district daily life separation due to the accentuated topography and the facilities placement faraway from that area. Barcelona citizen has a really strong sense of the neighborhood and their routine is almost made in a proximity of 500 m area. If that situation is true in the flat neighborhood of the city, in case topography accident is more evident. That’s why I personally see the continuous community engagement as a potential problem. The second one, is about the public license for the use of the space during design or/and construction phases. It would have to confer in a little time in order to not lost the citizen participation. Furthermore, the public and /or private fundraising could be change the quality of design and actors engagement.

The interesting landscape characters of the place would be show up to citizens as a base of a consensus design. An other really good starting point could be design a button-up program proposal and trying to connect with similar project in the city in order to create a network and obtain social support. Further, it could be useful to make a powerful program to “wake up” the citizens emotional sense of place, starting to engage closer schools and community association. At the same time, it would be beneficial organizing fundraising events and start a dialogue with town administration and political actors.

Three common areas stood out in the content of our assigned articles: Experst, Place Making and Resource Accessibility

Resource Accessibility is a nexus for a variety of themes represented in landscape democracy issues.
This aspect is important for stakeholders, as it encompasses both the physical and the abstract. In the case of the abstract, access to expert knowledge is limited and controlled by the elite, as with the city surplus. Imbalances to both the physical and metaphysical can be addressed through policy formation, which guarantees access to all stakeholders, no matter the power dynamic of a community. In the case of tangible resources, municipal programs can activate urban activity in post-industrial landscapes, through the use of obsolete industrial spaces. Where community programs and policy fail, stakeholders will reappropriate space for habitation - through squats, and food security - through illegal grazing of animals and gardening/farming on federal lands.

Place Making is a multi-faceted approach to the planning, design and management of public spaces. Place Making capitalizes on a local community's assets, inspiration, and potential, with the intention of creating public spaces that promote people's health, happiness, and well being. Landscape plays an important role in the design process. The term encourages disciplines involved in designing the built environment to work together in pursuit of qualities that they each alone are unable to achieve.

Experts are the ‘outsider’ stakeholders in the design process. They come with field-specific knowledge and advice on topics which could be out of reach/understanding of primary stakeholders (residents or community). The data and information that experts are equipped with help to bring a wider vision,
Geographers, landscape architects, planners and botanists would be essentially a part of this team. Their involvement in the earlier stages is very vital as it would help in steering the direction of conversation. But their involvement in the beginning can help in informing the primary stakeholders about aspects of the project. In the mid-way stage they could assist or show potential future scenarios considering if things went ahead in the said direction.

== Rationale: Why have you chosen this case for the landscape and democracy seminar? ==

I’ve chosen a demolished fenced storehouses area, placed in the Horta-Guinardò district of Barcelona, because it’s a local and medium scale site witch could represent a common situation in european cityscape, where citizens looking for interfaces area to connect with.
It’s a place really close to my apartment, so I’m emotionally connected with it. It’s make part of my daily landscape, indeed I can observe it from my windows at the 11th floor or I can pass by to go to the metro stop. Also I think, there is a lack of community and green public spaces in the city. I would like to keep it as no-building area and convert it in an Urban Open Space Citizens Laboratory. I think it could be a good starting point for improve community testing space for sustainable and community building-up practices in the neighborhood.

The first thing I see as challenge for changing the situation, is about district daily life separation due to the accentuated topography and the facilities placement faraway from that area.
Barcelona citizen has a really strong sense of the neighborhood and their routine is almost made in a proximity of 500 m area. If that situation is true in the flat neighborhood of the city, in case topography accident is more evident. That’s why I personally see the continuous community engagement as a potential problem.
The second one, is about the public license for the use of the space during design or/and construction phases. It would have to confer in a little time in order to not lost the citizen participation. Furthermore, the public and /or private fundraising could be change the quality of design and actors engagement.

The interesting landscape characters of the place would be show up to citizens as a base of a consensus design.
An other really good starting point could be design a button-up program proposal and trying to connect with similar project in the city in order to create a network and obtain social support. Further, it could be useful to make a powerful program to “wake up” the citizens emotional sense of place, starting to engage closer schools and community association.
At the same time, it would be beneficial organizing fundraising events and start a dialogue with town administration and political actors.

Three common areas stood out in the content of our assigned articles: Experst, Place Making and Resource Accessibility

Resource Accessibility is a nexus for a variety of themes represented in landscape democracy issues.
This aspect is important for stakeholders, as it encompasses both the physical and the abstract. In the case of the abstract, access to expert knowledge is limited and controlled by the elite, as with the city surplus. Imbalances to both the physical and metaphysical can be addressed through policy formation, which guarantees access to all stakeholders, no matter the power dynamic of a community. In the case of tangible resources, municipal programs can activate urban activity in post-industrial landscapes, through the use of obsolete industrial spaces. Where community programs and policy fail, stakeholders will reappropriate space for habitation - through squats, and food security - through illegal grazing of animals and gardening/farming on federal lands.

Place Making is a multi-faceted approach to the planning, design and management of public spaces. Place Making capitalizes on a local community's assets, inspiration, and potential, with the intention of creating public spaces that promote people's health, happiness, and well being. Landscape plays an important role in the design process. The term encourages disciplines involved in designing the built environment to work together in pursuit of qualities that they each alone are unable to achieve.

Experts are the ‘outsider’ stakeholders in the design process. They come with field-specific knowledge and advice on topics which could be out of reach/understanding of primary stakeholders (residents or community). The data and information that experts are equipped with help to bring a wider vision,
Geographers, landscape architects, planners and botanists would be essentially a part of this team. Their involvement in the earlier stages is very vital as it would help in steering the direction of conversation. But their involvement in the beginning can help in informing the primary stakeholders about aspects of the project. In the mid-way stage they could assist or show potential future scenarios considering if things went ahead in the said direction.

The first thing I see as challenge for changing the situation, is about district daily life separation due to the accentuated topography and the facilities placement faraway from that area.
Barcelona citizen has a really strong sense of the neighborhood and their routine is almost made in a proximity of 500 m area. If that situation is true in the flat neighborhood of the city, in case topography accident is more evident. That’s why I personally see the continuous community engagement as a potential problem.
The second one, is about the public license for the use of the space during design or/and construction phases. It would have to confer in a little time in order to not lost the citizen participation. Furthermore, the public and /or private fundraising could be change the quality of design and actors engagement.

I’ve chosen a demolished fenced storehouses area, placed in the Horta-Guinardò district of Barcelona, because it’s a local and medium scale site witch could represent a common situation in european cityscape, where citizens looking for interfaces area to connect with.
It’s a place really close to my apartment, so I’m emotionally connected with it. It’s make part of my daily landscape, indeed I can observe it from my windows at the 11th floor or I can pass by to go to the metro stop. Also I think, there is a lack of community and green public spaces in the city. I would like to keep it as no-building area and convert it in an Urban Open Space Citizens Laboratory. I think it could be a good starting point for improve community testing space for sustainable and community building-up practices in the neighborhood.

The first thing I see as challenge for changing the situation, is about district daily life separation due to the accentuated topography and the facilities placement faraway from that area.
Barcelona citizen has a really strong sense of the neighborhood and their routine is almost made in a proximity of 500 m area. If that situation is true in the flat neighborhood of the city, in case topography accident is more evident. That’s why I personally see the continuous community engagement as a potential problem.
The second one, is about the public license for the use of the space during design or/and construction phases. It would have to confer in a little time in order to not lost the citizen participation. Furthermore, the public and /or private fundraising could be change the quality of design and actors engagement.

I’ve chosen a demolished fenced storehouses area, placed in the Horta-Guinardò district of Barcelona, because it’s a local and medium scale site witch could represent a common situation in european cityscape, where citizens looking for interfaces area to connect with.
It’s a place really close to my apartment, so I’m emotionally connected with it. It’s make part of my daily landscape, indeed I can observe it from my windows at the 11th floor or I can pass by to go to the metro stop. Also I think, there is a lack of community and green public spaces in the city. I would like to keep it as no-building area and convert it in an Urban Open Space Citizens Laboratory. I think it could be a good starting point for improve community testing space for sustainable and community building-up practices in the neighborhood.
